BGP is a standardised exterior gateway protocol used to manage the routing and exchange of routing information between different Autonomous Systems (ASes) on the internet.

Autonomous Systems (ASes)

The internet is divided into discrete networks, each of which managed by a single organisation or entity. These networks are referred to as ASes. Each AS is assigned a unique Autonomous System Number (ASN) to identify it within the global internet. In 2018 there were over 60,000 ASes.
