Functional models describe business processes and the interaction of a software system with its environment. In object-oriented systems development, two types of models are used to describe the functionality of an system: use cases and activity diagrams. Both can be used to describe the current as-is system and the to-be system being developed.
Functional modelling models and presents the information gathered in the requirement gathering stage in the form of use case and activity diagrams and use case descriptions.
