Types of interviews

  • Unstructured
    • List of topics as guide but not have exact questions.
    • Start off with initial question and let interviewee discuss topic of choice.
    • If the conversation is stalled, introduce another topic from guide.
    • Allows interviewee to focus on topics/concerns they find important.
  • Simi-structured
    • More room to get clarification.
    • Start with a set of questions, which may be similar to questions used in a fully structured interview.
    • Probe depending on response.
  • Fully structured
    • Use rigid script to present question in a well-defined order.
    • Easy to analyse.
    • Difficult to follow-up if answer is unanticipated.

When to use a certain type

  • Unstructured
    • Appropriate when you do deep digging - search of critical comments, design requirements
    • Unfamiliar with problem domain or set of users
    • Participants educate you to understand their needs and potentially help you generate appropriate questions for subsequent structured interview.
