Types of interviews
- Unstructured
- List of topics as guide but not have exact questions.
- Start off with initial question and let interviewee discuss topic of choice.
- If the conversation is stalled, introduce another topic from guide.
- Allows interviewee to focus on topics/concerns they find important.
- Simi-structured
- More room to get clarification.
- Start with a set of questions, which may be similar to questions used in a fully structured interview.
- Probe depending on response.
- Fully structured
- Use rigid script to present question in a well-defined order.
- Easy to analyse.
- Difficult to follow-up if answer is unanticipated.
When to use a certain type
- Unstructured
- Appropriate when you do deep digging - search of critical comments, design requirements
- Unfamiliar with problem domain or set of users
- Participants educate you to understand their needs and potentially help you generate appropriate questions for subsequent structured interview.
